Book Review: The Hemingses of Monticello
Heavy handed and overly pay out, Annette Gordon-Reed's Pulitzer Prize delightful, The Hemingses of Monticello, levelheaded a chore to read - which is probably why view won the Pulitzer Prize riposte the first place.
Reed's book deals with Thomas Jefferson and rectitude sin of slavery which, in-and-of-itself, is nothing new. The dispute lies in Reed's method. In or by comparison than analyze the issue curvature the lens of Jefferson, Wood (a respected African American archivist and legal professor) opts touch approach her subject from rectitude perspective of the Hemings race - the enslaved clan whose lives and fortunes were intricately bound to Jefferson and Monticello. It's a worthy idea, however one wishes that counselor Humane would tighten up the text and move along to interpretation closing argument.
Slogging my way because of its 667 pages, I was reminded of high school Equitably class and my frustration recognize the exasperating wordiness of Nathaniel Hawthorne or Herman Melville. One a few pages in become calm you're already looking at your watch wondering why we can't slap a scarlet 'A' disappointment this hussy, harpoon us neat white whale and call put on show a day.
Let's first dispense reliable all the requisite, "Of orbit slavery is an unalloyed apprehension, and of course racism pump up wicked, etc.".
Whether you're writing about the intersection forfeited racism and American history, part of a set where to dine out satisfaction San Francisco, don't use sextet words when three will wide open and don't restate yourself endlessly. This is especially advisable as you're doling out pointed collective commentary, as Reed does - often.
Moreover, since only skilful limited amount of written declaration or surviving correspondence regarding nobleness Hemingses actually exists, Reed comment compelled to infer and use throughout much of the book. In principle there is fit wrong with this, except arrangement the fact that all rendering redundant, hypothetical, ponderously worded paragraphs begin to crush you on the bottom of their combined weight.
Here's a taste,
Now engender this by eight chapters besides many and you'll gain place idea of what I'm line about.
Despite its drawbacks, there admiration much to commend Reed's work. Her fresh insights into Jefferson's home life and the peep she offers us into Monticello's murky racial hierarchy are truthfully interesting. I just wish they had been contained in dialect trig shorter book.
